Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has described Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a painful setback, admitting that the disappointment still lingers among the players.

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the global showpiece ended despite earning a second chance through the playoff route. The Super Eagles overcame Gabon to keep their qualification dream alive but eventually fell to DR Congo in a penalty shootout.

Osimhen said missing a second consecutive World Cup remains difficult to accept, stressing that the players were desperate to secure a place at football’s biggest tournament.

The forward noted that the squad shares the frustration of millions of Nigerian fans, adding that the experience has left a lasting sense of regret within the team.

“I feel bad not playing at the World Cup. This is the second time in a row. I was talking with the other guys and they feel the same way, but we move,” Osimhen said.

The Galatasaray forward acknowledged that many members of the squad share the same frustration as preparations continue for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Despite the setback, Osimhen is expected to play a key role as the Super Eagles begin rebuilding for future international competitions.
