Prof. Ken Anugweje, Nigeria’s anti-doping chief, has applauded the transformative leadership of Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, for ushering in a new era of growth and progress in the sports sector. Prof. Anugweje emphasized that Senator Enoh’s leadership style, characterized by open access and transparency, has significantly enhanced trust and confidence in the Ministry of Sports.
Under Senator Enoh’s stewardship, the sports sector has experienced unprecedented growth and achievement, with notable successes including the remarkable performance of Team Nigeria at the African Games. Prof. Anugweje highlighted historic milestones such as the first swimming medal in 33 years and the first handball medal in 21 years, as well as the policy to give attention to all sports, and lure more private investors into the industry.
Prof. Anugweje commended Senator Enoh’s establishment of the Ministerial Podium Performance Committee, which has played a pivotal role in advancing preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He emphasized the committee’s tireless efforts in evaluating training camps and providing recommendations to optimize performance. Prof. Anugweje underscored the importance of the committee’s role not only in the African Games but also in the Olympics, with the ultimate goal of securing gold medals for Nigeria.
Looking ahead, Senator John Owan Enoh has already reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to consolidating strengths in sports where Nigeria excels while also prioritizing support for sports in which the country has potential for improvement. The Ministry will adopt various strategies and funding models to provide comprehensive assistance to athletes across all sports disciplines, ensuring that every athlete receives the support they need to succeed.
