Ahead of the planned nationwide protest, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has mobilized 4,200 officers throughout Abuja.
The deployment also includes explosive ordnance disposal experts stationed at key locations to enhance security.
In a statement issued Friday, Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh outlined the measures taken to ensure public safety, protect demonstrators, and prevent the protests from being exploited by non-state actors.
The strategy includes raids on suspected trouble spots, searches of uncompleted buildings and shanties, and enhanced patrols.
“The FCT Police Command is taking proactive steps in response to the planned protests by human rights activists and Nigerian youths, scheduled to run from August 1 to 10, 2024,” Adeh said.
“Our aim is to maintain public order and safeguard both protesters and properties.”
Adeh also relayed a warning from FCT Commissioner of Police Benneth Igweh, who emphasized that any destruction of property or violence will not be tolerated.
“The Commissioner acknowledges the right to protest but insists on peaceful demonstrations.
The police will firmly oppose any attempts at lawlessness or damage to property,” she added.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant and use police emergency lines to report any suspicious activity.
