The Rivers Police Command has raised concerns about the escalating nature of the ongoing protest in Rivers State, noting a disturbing trend of unlawful behavior.
According to the police, the demonstrators have been involved in extortion, vandalism, and harassment of business owners.
On Tuesday, fears grew among residents in some Port Harcourt areas following threats made by protesters on Monday, who demanded that residents, motorists, and shop owners either join the protest or stay indoors.
Shops that remained open on Tuesday were seen displaying branches and leaves to show solidarity with the protesters.
In the Rumuokoro area of Port Harcourt, the situation turned violent, with protesters setting up bonfires.
Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed that the protest has taken a troubling turn, citing a lack of clear leadership among the demonstrators, which has led to a breakdown in law and order.
The police have vowed to arrest and prosecute anyone infringing on the rights of others.
In a statement on Tuesday morning, Iringe-Koko said: “As of August 5th, 2024, the protest in Rivers State has become increasingly concerning.
While protesters were initially advised to demonstrate peacefully within designated areas, the situation has deteriorated due to a lack of coordination among the groups.

“The protesters have engaged in illegal activities such as burning tires, extorting motorists, blocking roads, damaging vehicles, harassing business owners, and stealing from residents.
Additionally, there have been threats of a shift in protest tactics on August 7th, with calls for traders and motorists to either participate or stay home.
“The Rivers State Police Command upholds the constitutional right to protest but has noted that organizers are losing control, leading to more violent and criminal behavior.
We will take decisive action to arrest and prosecute anyone violating the rights of others or engaging in criminal activities under the guise of protest.
“Protesters are advised to stay within the designated areas, such as Pleasure Park and Abali Park, and to avoid disrupting public order or engaging in unlawful activities.
The police are committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all residents during this period.”
