Real Madrid forward Rodrygo has voiced his disappointment at not being included in the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or. The 23-year-old, who netted 17 goals and provided nine assists in 51 appearances last season, was overlooked despite his impressive performance. Rodrygo’s Madrid teammates, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr., received nominations.
“I was upset; I think I deserved it,” Rodrygo told ESPN. “I don’t want to undermine the players who were selected, as they deserved it too, but I believe I had a place among the 30.”

The Ballon d’Or nominees are chosen by France Football’s editorial team, in collaboration with Ballon d’Or ambassador Didier Drogba and selected media members. The winner will be announced in Paris on October 28.
Rodrygo, who was part of Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League-winning team last season, cited his versatility as a potential reason for his omission. “Often, I’m just filling spaces,” he explained. “If someone is missing, they put Rodrygo in. It may sometimes hinder my recognition, but I’m a team player.”
