Solomon Ogba retains NOC VeePee seat; Maria Worphil, Rosa Collins Lose Bid

Former two-time President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, chief Solomon Ogba has been re-elected the first vice president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC.

Ogba polled 24 votes out of 40 to defeat his only opponent, Francis Orbih who is the president of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria. Orbih polled 16 votes.

Two executive board members of the AFN, Maria Worphil and Rosa Collins were not successful in their respective bid to become the third and fourth vice president of the NOC board.

Worphil, a former Secretary General of the AFN and a World Athletics Veteran Pin recipient polled just one vote to come third behind former Nigeria basketball star, Olumide Oyedeji who polled 24 votes and Daniel Igali, an Olympic Wrestling gold medalist for Canada who polled 15 votes.

Collins, the first woman to win the gold medal in the triple jump event in African Games history did not get a single vote in the election won by Mrs Olabisi Joseph of the School Sports Federation who polled 23 votes.

Two former members of the executive board of the AFN, Ibrahim Shehu Gusau and Sunday Adeleye were disqualified from taking part in the election.

Meanwhile, Engr Habu Gumel was re-elected as President of the NOC after defeating his only challenger, Sanni Ndanusa (21 to 19 votes) while Tunde Popoola staged a return as Secretary General.
