Super Falcons exit Paris Olympics with 3-1 defeat to Japan

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been eliminated from the 2024 Paris Olympics, falling 3-1 to Japan in their final group stage match.

This defeat marks their third loss in as many games.

Japan started the match with aggressive pressure, quickly pinning the Super Falcons back. In the seventh minute, Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made a crucial save to keep Japan at bay.

The relentless Japanese assault continued, with Osinachi Ohale making a vital block nine minutes later.

Japan’s breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when Chelsea forward Maika Hamano scored. Mina Tanaka extended Japan’s lead ten minutes later, highlighting their dominance.

Nigeria managed to pull one back just before halftime with a goal from PSG’s new signing Jennifer Echegini.

However, Japan’s Hana Kitagawa restored the two-goal lead in stoppage time with a brilliant free kick.

In the second half, Nigeria enjoyed more possession as Japan shifted to a defensive strategy, focusing on counter-attacks. A potential penalty for Japan in the 52nd minute was overturned after a VAR review determined there was no foul by Rasheedat Ajibade.

Despite their efforts, Nigeria finished at the bottom of Group C without securing any points.

Meanwhile, Japan’s victory cemented their position at the top of the group, demonstrating their strength and resilience throughout the tournament.
