SWAN lauds Dare on Birmingham 2022

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN FCT chapter has congratulated the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Honourable Sunday Dare for Nigeria’s outing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Team Nigeria went to the Commonwealth Games and won 12 Gold, 9 Silver and 14 Bronze medals to break the 1994 medal record.

The athletes were not only outstanding but also broke so many records at the just-concluded Games in Birmingham, England.

In a statement by the association’s secretary Chris Onokpegu, SWAN noted that there were no issue of protest or athletes fighting over their allowances for the first time while that there were no doping issues.

“However, we want to use this opportunity to call on the Honourable Minister and his team to start preparation in earnest for the upcoming All Africa Games and the Paris 2024 Olympics, so that the feat achieved at Birmingham will be a child’s play,” the statement noted.

In a related development, SWAN has commended the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) following the impressive performances of Falconets at the on-going FIFA U-20 World Cup in Costa Rica where they have secured a quarter-final berth after two wins in as many games against France and Korea.

“We also urge the NFF to ensure that all the allowances of the girls are given on time to avoid distraction so that the girls can bring home the elusive trophy,” the statement added.
