Unknown to the crowd last night at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, there was one race the trio of Chief Tonobok Okowa, Chief Solomon Ogba and Lady Rita Mosindi had eagerly awaited to commence because of the circumstances that trailed it. It was the men’s 4×100 relay. Three times the quartet had made vain efforts in Benin, Edo state, Lome, Togo and Cotonou, Benin Republic to grab the ticket to participate in the event at the upcoming World Championship in Budapest, Hungary.

Bringing the race to Delta, the home of sports in Nigeria by Chief Okowa, the never say die President of the AFN was a piece of history that must be well crafted for posterity.

But it was still intriguing that the quartet whose members are in the A list in the event had to contend with baton exchange.
Last night in Asaba at the Warri Relays, a grand prix, initiated years back by Chief Ogba, was a defining moments for the quartet to swim or sink on home soil and miss out for a possible podium finish in Budapest.

Led by Favour Ashe, the boys burnt the tracks to finish ahead of the others including the quartet from Togo, the Gambia and the teams of the para military.

Then the stadium bursted in celebration.
