Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi has spoken of his happiness at Nigeria beginning their 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup campaign with a come-from-behind win against the Dominican Republic on Sunday evening.

After Edison Azcona opened the scoring from the spot in the 23rd minute, the Flying Eagles leveled things up in the 31st minute when Guillermo Ronaldo de Peña Rosario put the ball into his own net, before Jude Sunday pounced on a defensive error and completed the comeback with twenty minutes left on the clock.

Bameyi noted that the Flying Eagles would have won by a higher margin if they were more clinical in front of goal.

Speaking to NFF TV post-match, Bameyi stated: “It was a good game, the three points was ours despite the fact we missed a lot of chances, you could see it from the statistics.”

“Still it is not a bad game, the three points is what we went for and we had it today.”

Nigeria will be guaranteed qualification to the round of 16 of the World Cup with a win against the Italians on Wednesday.

Bameyi has insisted that the Italians are beatable despite recording an impressive 3-2 win over South American champions and one of the pre-tournament favorites, Brazil in their opener.

“The next opponent beat Brazil and we were opportune to watch the first half. Any team that can beat Brazil will not be an easy team but we are Nigerians and not scared of anybody, and we know every team is beatable no matter how you play.

“If today we can win, then on Wednesday we can also win too.”
