The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday assured that political activities ahead of the next general elections would not slow the pace of infrastructure development in Abuja.

Wike gave the assurance while briefing journalists after inspecting ongoing projects across the nation’s capital.

Addressing concerns over possible political distractions, the minister said service delivery remains the top priority of the administration, reaffirming his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda and the infrastructure targets of the FCT Administration.

He said: “Politics is different; you have to serve the people. Politics has its own time. Work will continue. Politics will not affect what we are doing. The Area Council elections are coming up in the next few weeks; are we not still working? What is important is that we pay contractors and regularly monitor the projects. The politics of 2027 will not affect our job. The only effect is that people will see and be happy that the Renewed Hope Agenda is real.”

The minister provided updates on key projects inspected, including the Collector Road C01 in the Institute and Research District, which links Baze University, the Body of Benchers, Nile University and the Wupa Train Station of the Abuja Light Rail.

He said substantial progress has been recorded on the road, adding that the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), has pledged to complete the project by May 2026, making it eligible for possible inauguration during President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

Wike also disclosed that the Annex Building of the Body of Benchers is about 80 per cent completed, expressing satisfaction with the quality and pace of work.

On the access road linking Bill Clinton Drive to the Tungan Madaki community, the minister said the 7-kilometre road, which includes a four-span bridge, is part of a compensation package for the construction of the second runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

He added that the project is scheduled for completion and handover by the second week of June 2026.

To further improve connectivity, Wike said he has directed the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to work with CCECC on a design to extend the Tungan Madaki access road to link with the Zuba Road corridor.

“We are opening up other areas. You can imagine what the people here go through during the rainy season; it is unimaginable,” he said.

“I have directed the Executive Secretary to liaise with CCECC on how to link the road to Zuba Road. They are to bring the design. That extension is also about seven kilometres. There is nothing this administration will not do to give the people what they deserve.”
