The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed a fire broke out at its Abuja office on Saturday morning, with no casualties reported.

The incident occurred at the FIRS office located at No. 15 Sokode Crescent, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, reportedly on the fourth floor of the building.

In a statement, Sikiru Akinola, Technical Assistant (Print Media) to the Executive Chairman of FIRS, said security personnel and emergency responders acted swiftly to contain the fire.

“The fire, which broke out on the fourth floor, was promptly attended to by our security personnel on duty,” Akinola said, adding that the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service and other emergency agencies ensured the blaze did not spread.

“With the prompt support of the FCT Fire Service and other emergency responders, the fire was successfully contained and prevented from affecting other parts of the building,” he said.

Akinola confirmed that all staff and occupants were safe, though some offices on the affected floor sustained damage.

“The Service can confirm that no lives were lost. However, a number of offices on the affected floor sustained damage,” he said. The floor reportedly houses executive office suites of past FIRS chairmen, with the extent of damage still being assessed.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched. Early findings suggest the incident may have been triggered by an electrical fault.

“A thorough investigation has commenced, with preliminary assessments pointing to a possible electrical fault,” Akinola said. He added that the Service is reviewing its internal safety procedures in response to the incident.

“All internal safety protocols are being examined and reinforced to prevent future occurrences,” he stated.

FIRS assured the public that operations would continue while remedial measures are implemented to address the impact of the fire and strengthen safety across its facilities.
