Five-star Celtic stretch Scottish Premiership lead

Date:

Celtic extended their Scottish Premiership lead to five points with a 5-0 demolition of Ross County, with all the goals coming before half-time, on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers took the chance to rotate his side with six changes from Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Club Brugge in the Champions League.

But four of those brought into the side took the chance to make their mark by scoring as County were blown away at Celtic Park.

Liam Scales headed in from a corner to open the floodgates before he teed up Luke McCowan to double Celtic’s lead.

Paulo Bernardo slotted in the third and Callum McGregor smashed home for the sixth time this season from outside the box to keep the goals flowing.

Adam Idah then curled home his eighth goal of the campaign.

There could have been many more for the Scottish champions, who hit the woodwork three times in the second period.

However, they had already done enough damage to stretch their lead over second-placed Aberdeen and open up a 14-point gap on Rangers, who travel to St. Johnstone on Sunday.

“For a complete 90 minutes, that was so good on the back of a tough Champions League game in midweek,” said Rodgers.

“All the guys who came in can be called starters. We need that competition and energy because we put so much into the games.”

Hibs moved off the foot of the table with a much-needed 3-0 win at Motherwell to ease the pressure on manager David Gray.

Dundee United moved level on points with Rangers thanks to a 2-0 win over St. Mirren.

Kilmarnock and Dundee drew 1-1 at Rugby Park.
