Former President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, Ibrahim Shehu Gusau is out of the race to become the next President of the Confedereation of African Athletics, CAA.

The CAA Presidential election will hold during the its Council and Elective Congress scheduled to hold in Lusaka, Zambia from 25 to 27 April, 2023, two days before the start of the African U18 and U20 Championships which start on April 29 in Ndola, also in Zambia.

Gusau, according to sources at the headquarters of the CAA, was not cleared by the vetting panel of World Athletics for the race.

According to the CAA constitution, each candidate for the post of President of the confederation must be declared eligible by the World Athletics Vetting Panel as a condition sine qua non and prior to their appointment by their respective Federation. Without this, nominations cannot be accepted.

Gusau, who is still challenging the election of the Tonobok Okowa led executive board of the AFN in court has failed the minimum test of eligibility to become the CAA President.

Gusau also failed the eligibility test to become the new President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee last December after his application was rejected by the electoral committee.

Meanwhile, the election of Tonobok Okowa as President of West African Region 2 will be confirmed at the 30th congress of the CAA in Lusaka.

Okowa succeded Gusau as Region 2 president in February 2023, 20 months after the Delta State Sports Commission succeded him as President of AFN at an Elective Congress approved by World Athletics in June 2021 in Abuja.
