Chairman of the Delta State Athletics Association, Chief Malik Itiako Ikpokpo, has charged home-based athletes preparing for the All Nigeria Athletics National Trials ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games to compete with confidence and a winning mentality.

Speaking ahead of the trials in Lagos, Ikpokpo urged the athletes to concentrate on their preparations rather than concerns about the venue, stressing that success would depend largely on their readiness and mental strength.

“Tracks are the same everywhere. What matters most is your confidence, preparation and determination to perform at your best,” he said.

The athletics administrator expressed optimism that a number of emerging talents would make a strong impression at the trials, pointing to the wealth of athletes discovered during the Niger Delta Games.

According to him, the regional competition has evolved into a vital talent-development platform, providing young athletes with opportunities to showcase their abilities and progress to the highest levels of the sport.

“I strongly believe a young athlete can pull a surprise in Lagos. We saw so many talented youngsters during the Niger Delta Games, and in a competition like this, one breakthrough performance can change everything,” he added.

Ikpokpo, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Dunamis Icon and founder of the Niger Delta Games, has received praise from sports stakeholders for his commitment to grassroots athletics development.

The annual Niger Delta Games has continued to provide opportunities for young athletes across the region, with many of its products gradually emerging as future prospects for Nigerian athletics.
