The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the resumption of enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, pending the final determination of the matter before the courts.

The Force said the decision follows a careful review of emerging security concerns and the need to protect citizens. The resumption comes after clarification that no court order restrained the police from enforcing the law on tinted vehicle glass.

In a statement on Monday, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that enforcement had previously been suspended to give motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation. However, recent spikes in criminal activities involving vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass prompted the renewed action.

“Some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent acts,” the statement said. “In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force finds it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard communities.”

Enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit will take effect from January 2, 2026. CSP Hundeyin said the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, assured the public that operations would be conducted professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights and in full compliance with the law.

Motorists requiring the permit are urged to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles meet legal standards. The NPF reiterated its commitment to public safety and collaboration with stakeholders to maintain security across the country.
