Nigeria, Ghana may clash in CHAN qualifiers

Nigeria and perennial rivals, Ghana could once again meet in as many games as the two giants in African football could potentially meet again this year in the 2022 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers

The draw for the Algeria 2022 CHAN qualifiers was held in Cairo, Egypt yesterday and saw a potential clash between Nigeria and Ghana for a place at the finals.

The home-based Eagles’ campaign for a spot in Algeria starts with a bye in the first qualifying round but will take on the winner of Ghana versus Benin tie in the final round of Western Zone B.

Other clashes in Zone B will see Cote d’Ivoire face Burkina Faso while Togo will slug it out with Niger for a place in the Finals.

Recalled that the Black Stars of Ghana stopped the Super Eagles of Nigeria from qualifying for the 2022 World Cup after they played a 1-1 draw in Abuja on March 29 with the former Gold Coast nation progressing on away goal rule.

Both teams also met again in the opening Group B match at the 2022 West Africa Football Union, WAFU Zone B U-20 Tournament in Niger with Nigeria’s Flying Eagles emerging victorious with a 2-0 win.

The seeding system for the tournament was based on the results of the last three editions of CHAN, meaning that Ghana and Benin were the lowest-ranked sides and will face each other in regionally-based qualifiers.

A total of 46 nations were entered in the draw for the expanded tournament for locally-based players which will feature 18 teams for the first time.
