Nigeria inch closer to next round with big away win

Nigeria inched closer to the fourth round of the qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2022 after a healthy 4-0 away victory over Congo in Brazzaville on Sunday.

The Falconets arrived the Congolese capital on Friday, looking to see off their hosts with a wide margin in a bid to make the return leg a mere formality, and they achieved that in styles.

After a cagey start, the Nigerians finally broke the deadlock against their Central African counterparts, with Idoko Mercy getting the lead in the 38th minute for the West Africans.

Christopher Danjuma’s side continued from where they left off in the first half as Sabastine Flourish doubled the visitors’ lead just two minutes after the restart of the contest.

The home side failed to contain the pouring attack of the Nigerians as they unfortunately gifted the visitors a penalty, which was superbly converted for their third of the match by Esther Onyenezide in the 50th minute.

Five minutes later, Deborah Ajibola netted the fourth of the game to seal a big away first leg victory for the two-time U20 Women’s World Cup silver medal winning nation.

Despite a big away win, Nigeria will be keen to complete a double and wide aggregate score against the Congolese in the second leg in Lagos to fire a strong warning to their next round’s opponents, Cameroon.
