Ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has stepped up consultations with northern leaders, underscoring his efforts to build a broad national consensus.
Obi visited Zaria in Kaduna State and Minna in Niger State as part of the outreach. In Zaria, he met with Prof. Ango Abdullahi, former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University and Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF). In Minna, he held discussions with former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.
Confirming the visits on his verified X handle, Obi said his engagement with Prof. Abdullahi focused on national unity and practical strategies for rebuilding the country.
He stated, “Our conversation centred on the pressing issues facing our nation, the imperative of unity, and practical ways to rebuild Nigeria. We spoke candidly about the challenges confronting our country and the responsibility of leadership to transcend divisions and work towards the common good of all Nigerians.”

During his Zaria visit, Obi also interacted with a group of graduating pilots at the airport, urging them to remain disciplined and committed to excellence. “Nigeria needs your skills, integrity, and professionalism to drive progress and development,” he told them.
In Niger State, Obi presented an autographed copy of the book Growing Apart to Gen. Babangida, a work highlighting the divergent paths of Indonesia and Nigeria. He discussed national unity, security, and improving citizens’ livelihoods.
“These engagements have reinforced my conviction that meaningful progress requires honest dialogue and collective responsibility. I believe that a New Nigeria is possible, and I remain committed to contributing to its realisation,” Obi said.
