UPDATED: 5 killed, 35 injured in Maiduguri blast – Police

The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that five people were killed and 35 others injured in a bomb blast at a mosque in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

The attack, carried out with an improvised explosive device (IED), is believed to have been the act of a suspected suicide bomber in the Gamboru area of the city.

DSP Nahum Daso, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Borno Command, confirmed the incident in an interview with newsmen in Maiduguri.

He stated that the suspected bomber detonated the IED at around 6:15 p.m. during congregational prayers. Five people died instantly, while 35 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The injured were immediately evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

Daso added that operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, along with other security agencies, were deployed to secure the area, conduct thorough checks, and ensure no secondary devices were planted.

He said the scene was cordoned off as security agencies began a full-scale investigation into the incident.

The PPRO urged residents to remain calm, stay vigilant, and report any suspicious persons, movements, or objects to the nearest security formation.
