The Senate has confirmed former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), as the nation’s new Minister of Defence.
President Bola Tinubu, in a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, urged the upper chamber to consider and approve the retired general for the role.
Appearing before lawmakers on Wednesday, December 3, Musa pledged to strengthen military professionalism and reaffirmed Nigeria’s capacity to defeat internal security threats.

He assured the Senate of his commitment to national security, saying: “I pledge to do my best to ensure that Nigeria is secure and safe. We need the support of everyone—every Nigerian—because this is a team effort.”
Musa described the country’s adversaries as “evil forces that don’t mean well for this country and have no respect for human lives,” stressing the need for unified national backing to counter them.
Drawing from his 39 years in service, Musa said he understands the nation’s security landscape and the steps required to address it.
“As I come on board, having served 39 years in the Armed Forces, we have seen what is going on, we understand what is going on, and we know what we need,” he told the lawmakers.
Musa previously served as Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai, before becoming Commander of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps. President Tinubu appointed him Chief of Defence Staff in 2023, a position he held until October 2025.
