‘Why we disqualified Nigerian powerlifters’

Date:

facts have emerged over the disqualification of Nigerian Paralympic gold medallist Latifat Tijani and Onyinyechi Gift Mark from the women’s lightweight powerlifting event of the 2022 Commonwealth Games as the technical officials attributed their exit to late arrival for kits inspection.

In a statement issued at 2.42 pm local time on Thursday, August 4, with the competition beginning at 3 pm, the technical delegate led by Malaysian official Shida Mat Shah said the duo was disqualified before the start of the competition after arriving 25 minutes late to a kit check.

“Two athletes from Nigeria team were disqualified due to non-compliance to Technical Rules 17.1.4 ‘athletes does not present out to the kit check in the scheduled time and/or with a form of identification, they will be disqualified (DSQ)’,” a statement from the technical delegate read.

“The two athletes were present at 2.10 pm, 25 minutes late from the scheduled kit check time of 1.45 pm,” the statement stated.
