The build up has intensified ahead of the first ever World Boxing Council (WBC) amateur boxing championship in Lagos. Africa’s leading boxing outfit Yucateco Boxing Promotions will be staging the groundbreaking event from February 6th-8th at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
The event which will serve as a qualifier for the maiden WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup in Mexico later in the year will feature pugilists from Kenya, Uganda, Togo, Senegal, Ghana, Mali, Cameroon and Nigeria.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Yucateco boxing promotions Omonlei Yakubu Imadu, said the maiden WBC Amateur Boxing tournament in Africa has signal a new dawn for amateur boxing development in the continent.
” i am happy my promotion has finally made this happen, bringing the first ever WBC amateur tournament to Africa is not a child’s play, and i am most inportantly very happy that this will be happening in my beloved country Nigeria”.
” we are bringing the world to Lagos and this truly delights me, the president of the World Boxing Council (WBC) Mauricio Sulaimán, as well as the president of Africa Boxing Union (ABU) Houcine Houichi, will both be in Nigeria with their team for the event”.
Imadu who also doubles as the president of the Boxing Promoters Association of Nigeria (BPAN) said the Most Valuable Boxers in each weight categories will be decorated with the prestigious WBC Amateur title belt.

Other dignitaries expected at the event includes the Governor of Lagos state Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Chairman National Sports Commission (NSC) Shehu Dikko, DG NSC Hon. Bukola Olopade, as well as the majority leader of the 10th National Assembly Hon. Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, MHR amongst others.
