Manchester City midfielder, Phil Foden, has been named UEFA Champions League Player of the Week, edging out Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen for the honour.

Foden struck twice in City’s 4–1 triumph over Borussia Dortmund, guiding the English champions to a third win in the group phase.

Osimhen, who netted a hat-trick in Galatasaray’s 3–0 victory over Ajax, finished second in the voting after powering the Turkish champions to their best-ever start in the competition. Club Brugge’s Carlos Fobbs and Arsenal’s Mikel Merino placed third and fourth, respectively.

Osimhen’s treble against Ajax, however, etched his name into Champions League history. The Super Eagles forward became the first Galatasaray player to score braces in back-to-back matches and the first to claim three consecutive Man of the Match awards in the competition.

He is also the second Nigerian ever to record a Champions League hat-trick — the first being Yakubu Aiyegbeni in 2002.

The 25-year-old has now scored 15 goals in the UEFA Champions League and 25 in all UEFA club competitions, surpassing Obafemi Martins (23) as Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in Europe.

Osimhen currently leads the 2025 Champions League scoring chart with six goals, ahead of Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, who each have five.

He will now turn his attention to international duty as Nigeria prepare to face Gabon in the CAF World Cup playoffs on November 13.
